Underwriter - Bloodstock
David Higgins began his career in Insurance in 1981 with the Langton Underwriting Agency in Lloyd's with their Aviation Syndicate, becoming Active Underwriter in 2000. Following the acquisition of Kingsmead by the Advent Group, David joined the SVB Group (latterly Novae) where he continued writing a Non-Proportional Aviation Account, leading many of the Aviation Insurers programmes worldwide.
In 2012, David was asked to run the Bloodstock Unit at Novae which insured Stallions, Race horses and Sports horses. In 2017, David joined Castel to underwrite a bloodstock product within Castel Specialty.
In addition to the underwriting function within Bloodstock, time is spent attending the thoroughbred sales, getting to know owners, breeders, brokers and bloodstock agents. Racecourse visits essential!
David lives in Suffolk and enjoys tennis and travel, trying to improve his Danish and watching his 'bits' of racehorses on the track.
Underwriter - FAC
Paul is a London market veteran whose career has been split into two distinct parts:
Starting as a teenager, he spent the first part of his insurance life on the broking side working his way up from a claims clerk through to claims broker and eventually senior placing positions at a variety of brokers working mainly on large short-tail accounts on a worldwide basis.
The second part of his career has involved the underwriting sphere commencing as the deputy underwriter of a new small Lloyd’s syndicate leading to senior positions at two major Lloyd’s syndicates where he developed and grew substantial property portfolios in a leading position.
Latterly he has moved into the MGA sector culminating in him joining Castel to develop a facultative reinsurance business.
Underwriter - Inherent Defects
Peter started underwriting Construction all risks and Erection all risks projects in 2010, and expanded this to include Inherent Defects Insurance (IDI), as well as participating in and developing several owner and contractor facilities and annual accounts. Prior to commencing his insurance career in 2010, Peter had already gained substantial construction and risk management experience in a number of roles and locations covering the construction, project controls, safety and contract administration disciplines on multiple infrastructure mega-projects globally – including High Speed 1, New Doha International Airport, Cross Sydney Tunnel and Autostrada Transylvania.
Peter graduated with MEng (Hons) in 2003, and became a Chartered Engineer in 2010, before moving to insurance, first in Switzerland and then with Munich Re in London, before moving to Castel in 2017.
In his spare time Peter enjoys cooking, cycling, and singing along to 80’s power rock ballads.
Underwriter - Inherent Defects
Lynesh started his insurance career in 2010, underwriting engineering and renewable energy risks for five years, before moving into Inherent Defects Insurance at Aviva, where he was the Senior Underwriter within the team. Lynesh's primary role was to underwrite large commercial IDI risks in the UK and Europe. Lynesh focuses on underwriting IDI and building the commercial book.
Lynesh graduated with a BSc (Hons) Economics degree in 2009 and is a Chartered Insurer having completed his ACII in 2016.
In his spare time, Lynesh enjoys travelling, playing/watching football and cricket.
Underwriter - Political Risk
Tom has over 18 years’ experience in the London political risk market, starting as a broker with Willis in 2001. After 8 years there, Tom joined Liberty Syndicates to underwrite the political risk and trade credit book before moving to help start up the ANV (Amtrust) account in 2013.
Tom has a degree in politics and economics and has a wide range of expertise in this niche class of business, having been involved in the broking and underwriting of deals from oil trading to banking and aviation leasing. Based on this experience, Tom identified the opportunity for writing this class on an MGA platform, utilising strong relationships with brokers and clients to target core business in a limited exposure book.
Away from the office Tom is a keen boater and swimmer and enjoys playing his guitar, cooking, books, films and his volunteer work.
Underwriter - Bloodstock
Tara has had 16 years' experience in the insurance industry.
Tara is a Bloodstock Underwriter within Castel Specialty, focussing on morality of breeding and racing throughbreds, high value sports horses and fertility of new thoroughbred stallion prospects. Tara has been writing bloodstock for 10 years previously having been based at Novae Plc.
Prior to working at Novae, Tara was an Account Executive at Lockton (previously Alexander Forbes) within the Professional Indemnity department.
Other interests include horse riding (including surviving a 1.5 mile charity race at Newbury), hockey and skiing.
Stuart began his career in insurance with the Guardian Royal Exchange in Croydon in 1985. Since then he has worked in a variety of underwriting roles, both in the company market and at Lloyd’s. Prior to working with Castel, Stuart was Head of Commercial at Chaucer Insurance. Stuart is a Chartered Insurer and Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Outside of work, Stuart enjoys cycling, walking and any other excuse to get outdoors.
Sam joined Castel in August 2017 to work on the Underwriting Services Team, assisting the Media/Cyber, W&I and Facultative Property cells. He now works solely with the Facultative Property team as an Assistant Underwriter.
Outside of work, Sam enjoys supporting West Ham United and playing music.
Trade Credit Lead
Will has over 30 years experience working within Trade Credit Insurance and Corporate Banking. Over this time he has worked for HSBC, Atradius, Santander, Lloyds Bank, AIG and Canopius holding a number of Senior Risk and Commercial roles within Europe and North America. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago as well as a Politics Degree from Leicester University.
He has served as Chairperson and representative of industry bodies such as the Association of British Insurers (ABI) Trade Credit Committee and the Berne Union.
Outside of work Will enjoys running and travelling as well as reading and music.
Colin has written worldwide construction and engineering classes for 32 years and has been based on London, Germany and the USA during his career. He joined Castel in April 2019 from Beazley where he was Global Head of Construction & Engineering for 15 years leading four platforms writing business in London, USA, Singapore and Latin America. He began his career at St Paul Companies, and from there spent time with Cologne Re in Germany and Cigna/ACE and GE Frankona in London.
Colin has a background in all types of construction and engineering insurances, including over the years contractors all risk, engineering all risks, advanced loss of profits/delay in start-up, machinery breakdown/business interruption, power generation, contractors equipment and all associated classes, and all writes on both an annually renewable and single project basis.
Colin graduated from Kingston University in 1986 with an honours degree in Economics, Politics and German.
In his spare time he enjoys all sport, playing and listening to music, walking, and hard work in the garden.
