Chief Executive Officer
Mark has over 35 years’ experience within the insurance industry. After 20 years in the Lloyd’s broking community, Mark co-founded Wildnet Group with Benfield.
In April 2004 he led Wildnet’s MBO before stepping down from his CEO role in April, 2013.
Mark joined Castel in July 2013 and has overseen the successful launch of the business and the creation of its first underwriting cells.
Mark was elected to the Board of the Managing General Agents Association (MGAA) in February, 2016.
In his spare time, Mark enjoys running, cycling and sailing.
Chief Underwriting Officer
James has over 35 years’ experience in the Lloyd’s insurance market. The last 26 years were spent at Amlin where he was most recently Global Head of Underwriting Performance. Prior to establishing the underwriting management framework within Amlin, James was the Deputy Underwriter for FC Bowring and Others with responsibility for the direct marine account.
James joined Castel in July 2015 as Chief Underwriting Officer and is responsible for establishing an underwriting governance and performance control framework.
Outside of work, James spends most of his time with his six children supporting them in numerous sporting activities
Roland is a chartered accountant. He started his finance career with Littlejohn Frazer in 2002 and after qualifying he worked for Mitsui Sumitomo, Alterra at Lloyd’s and Amlin.
Roland joined Barbican Insurance Group in 2012, initially as the Group’s financial controller. He subsequently took up the role of Finance Director for Castel and Barbican’s other intermediary companies in 2014.
Outside of work Roland enjoys running and following Welsh rugby.
Vanessa joined Castel in September 2015 from Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group where she was the Aviation Claims Manager.
She has over 30 years’ experience across all classes of aviation claims and has held senior claims roles within a number of established Lloyd’s and London market underwriting businesses and brokers.
Vanessa is responsible for the management and delivery of claims services across Castel’s existing and new cells.
Outside of work, Vanessa enjoys golf, running and tennis.
Technical Operations Manager
Tina joined Castel in February 2015 having worked at Willis Ltd for 24 years, initially within legal and risk management handling the group’s insurance programme. In 2001 she began managing the technical and operations team within the professional indemnity practice.
Tina is ACII qualified and has assisted in FCA audits, contract quality control and meeting contract certainty requirements.
Outside of work, Tina enjoys travelling.
Tom began his career in 2007 with Littlejohn (now PKF Littlejohn) in Canary Wharf working on a wide range of clients including Lloyd’s syndicates and insurance brokers.
He achieved his ACA qualification in December 2009 and subsequently joined Barbican Insurance Group in April 2013 as Group Accountant.
At Castel, Tom controls the MGA’s finance function.
Outside of work, Tom enjoys playing squash, following Arsenal and travelling.
Executive Assistant to CEO
Loretta has worked in the insurance industry for ten years, having previously worked for Euler Hermes and Travelers, where her roles saw her working in the collections, claims and reinsurance divisions.
Loretta joined Castel in November 2013 to support CEO Mark Birrell.
In her spare time, Loretta enjoys socialising, hairdressing and keeping fit.
Freddie began his insurance career in 2014 with AmTrust at Lloyd’s before moving to Barbican Insurance Group. He has worked for a wide range of different classes of business.
Freddie joined Castel in September 2015 working in the operations team, supporting all underwriting cells.
Outside of work, Freddie enjoys socialising, playing squash and travelling.
